I'm promoting a journey to a more sustainable future. This can be encapsulated in the following mission statement:
One planet living, for humanity, forever
Oxfordshire and the neighbouring areas have a wealth of assets, both intellectual and commercial, to bring to bear on the major emerging sustainability challenges for:
- Energy generation, storage, transmission and efficient use
- Transportation (eg Electrification)
- Water and food
- Green entrepreneurship
- Land usage (eg local food growing)
- Sustainable lifestyles
- Biodiversity and ecosystems
- Green economics

More in my LinkedIn profile (link shown near top of this page). Why should we 'do' sustainability?I like the following quote by John Roemer:
"The simplest ethical justification of sustainability . . . is that the date at which a person is born should be viewed as arbitrary from the moral viewpoint, and therefore no generation should be better off than any other generation, unless such a utility difference comes for free, in the sense that it comes without lowering the utility of the worst off generation." Example - one type of solution that turns an ancient technology to modern use - hydro-electric power
Hydro-electric power is coming to Oxfordshire soon. See the Osney Lock Hydro Scheme at: http://www.osneylockhydro.co.uk/ See also the Abingdon Hydro scheme: http://www.abingdonhydro.org.uk/ Other schemes are further developed or already operating - see more details and links on the Ham Hydro website: http://www.hamhydro.org/ The picture below shows the technology often used in these schemes - reverse Archimedean Screws. |
