The panels on our roof seem to be performing well, despite the fact it is midwinter. Here's a recent example of the daily profile of energy generation, from a day when there was almost wall-to-wall sunshine. The uneven shape of the curve in the afternoon is because of the shape and orientation of the roof pitches.

I've just joined this young but ambitious charity as Treasurer and Trustee. South West London Environment Network is an umbrella organisation for a large network of private, public and third sector organisations who want to build a more sustainable future. Its main geographical area is a wedge running either side of the River Thames South West from (roughly) Kew Gardens out towards Heathrow and the M25.
SWLEN's mission is: "To enthuse and empower citizens so that they can work together to protect the environment and to deliver solutions to environmental problems." I look forward to working with like-minded volunteers, employees and trustees to turn this mission into reality. More info at: http://www.swlen.org.uk/ The weather has been so mild this weekend that I've been able to get on with a few jobs that might otherwise have had to wait for Spring.
Removed some elder/alder and young ornamental trees to make way for some hazel nut saplings which I've now planted - next to some older ones which produced quite a few nuts last Autumn. One of the trees I removed (from the Sycamore family) yielded an interesting off-cut in the process - a very straight 'pole' or 'rod' about 8 feet long with a near-perfect fork at the top - the sort of thing a very old scouting manual would say would be just the ticket if you ever came across a snake you wanted to keep at bay. Not sure what I'll use it for - perhaps for holding up some string or wire for some purpose - but I've put it on one side for now. Seems a shame to kill some trees, but I console myself with the thought that I'm replacing them with more productive, but still indigenous, plants and trees. Have started moving netted soft fruit area - transplanted a small cherry tree so far which has never done well in its old location- raspberries will follow at a later date, and some currant bushes . The new location has been selected because it's convenient for building netting around it before the Summer ripening season, being next to a shed. The old area was already defunct after most of it was turned into a chicken run last year. |
