The capacity margin concept helps explain why some people in this debate argue that UK electricity generation capacity needs to be somewhat higher in 2020 than it is now (despite flat overall energy demand) in order to deal with increasing electrification of heating and transportation, and in order to maintain the capacity margin. According to that school of thought, the crunch seems to be coming in about 2016 when existing capacity seriously drops out, thereby threatening the sufficiency of the capacity margin.
