Fabulous as it was as a showcase for UK history, heritage, inventiveness and culture, when the rural idyll was replaced by industrial urbanisation, what I hoped would be the next phase never came. What we got was a lot of modern consumerism - music, fashion, and (yes, very entertaining as it was) Mr Bean. What we lacked was an exciting and compelling picture of the future where agricultural and industrial heritages could have been brought together and integrated into a tableau of post-industrial urban farming, with communities and their landscape brought back into a sustainable balance. The first two pictures below are what we got. The third one is what I would have liked to have seen next. Conclusion - a valiant effort, a tremendous and impressive show, but a missed opportunity to provide visible leadership for the future to billions of people watching the opening ceremony. Let's hope the closing ceremony can do better on that score.
