Olympic Games to the UK. I heard a talk a few days ago about the extent to which
this Olympic Games will address its own carbon impacts. Whatever it can't
control itself, it plans to settle through buying carbon credits. Whether you're
a fan of these credits or not, at least the Olympic Committee are doing their
best to be aware of its impacts on the sustainability of this great celestial
space-ship we call Earth.
And that brings me to the reason for this blog
- to capture and share thoughts about sustainability. Many years ago, I used to
write a diary - with pen and paper. My diaries eventually got lost. What a
waste. I hope this blog provides a better chance of some of my thoughts
surviving me and perhaps helping others to formulate or modify their own views
on this, the most significant challenge facing mankind since the prospect of
mutually assured [nuclear] destruction ("MAD") in the seventies. It is no less
threatening, albeit over a much longer time-line than "MAD".
On balance,
I'm an optimist rather than a doom-merchant. I lean towards Paul Gilding's views
rather than those of James Lovelock. Change brings opportunities. However,
there's no guarantee that the inevitable transition to a different set of
equilibria for total amount (and distibution) of:
population,
land,
water,
energy,
wealth
will be anything less than dramatic and painful. Here's hoping that anyone reading this has
more opportunities than pains.
